Beginning Backpacking for Adults

Do you enjoy being outside? Would you like to immerse yourself in nature, living in the woods and out of a backpack?

Are you a parent or youth leader who would like to confidently share the outdoors with the children in your life?

We provide opportunities for adults to learn backpacking skills. During these 4-night hiking trips for novices, we teach you everything you need to know to become a competent hiker, staying healthy and safe in the woods.

Join us and experience life with dirt underfoot and sky overhead.
The course takes place on a section of the Appalachian Trail. The hiking itself is easy-to-moderate; we will spend 4-6 hours each day walking. When not hiking, we will focus on the skills required to live well in the woods.

Specialized backpacking gear will be provided. Each participant is responsible for bringing suitable outdoor clothing, trail-worthy footwear, and items for his or her personal use. Each participant must also bring a backpack that fits well; it may be borrowed or rented.

For maximal success, each participant will need to spend some time prior to the trip reading the course materials and collecting the required personal gear.

For those affiliated with Scouts or other youth groups, the course can include considerations for teaching and outfitting groups of youth and adults.

Check the calendar for scheduled courses. Want a custom course for your group? Contact us; we'll be glad to help!

About our principal instructor:

"I have known Em for seven years, and have gone backpacking with her on numerous occasions.  Her knowledge of backpacking is unparalleled, and I cannot imagine hiking with a more positive, upbeat, and refreshingly honest person. She truly cares for others, and will do whatever it takes to make sure your experience in the outdoors is revitalizing and worthwhile." --Lisa H.

"I have known Em for over ten years. She has been a hiking partner, fellow trainer, coach and friend. During that time, I have seen how she shares her love of the outdoors and her skills and experience in being outdoors. Her method of coaching and training not only imparts specific knowledge, but also provides the resources and questions for a journey of self discovery. All who have had the opportunity to hike with her or be taught by her have had a good time and come away with a heightened appreciation for nature, for their place in the natural world and for themselves."

"Em has a passion for backpacking and sharing the beauty and wonder of the outdoor world. This passion shines through in her teaching and leadership. To ensure an enjoyable trip for everyone she maintains an active awareness of group dynamics and personalities, and works to make every person's experience rewarding. She understands the beginner and teaches skills in a progressive manner to give participants knowledge and confidence. She puts a high priority on safety and is very risk averse.

My experience with her began 7 years ago when I was a novice in the outdoors. She led my first backpacking trip. I had recently been diagnosed with serious food allergies and intolerances and Em was very inclusive and willing to work with my restricted diet. Her guidance, enthusiasm and encouragement inspired me to continue hiking. Using her example, I now teach backpacking and lead trips for Girl Scouts."
